Trailcampro Analysis
The 2016 Moultrie M-888 is a red glow infrared game camera designed for taking pictures or videos of wildlife. The red IR flash can be seen (it is a faint red glow when taking a picture or video), so this is best for areas where the risk of theft is minimal.
Picture Quality
Photo resolution: 14 mpxl (interpolated) | Video Resolution: 1280 x 720 (no audio) | Flash Type: Red Glow Infrared
Daytime pictures have plenty of bright, vivid color. Clarity looks similar to last year, which is good but not great. The camera tends to struggle with dark objects in shade. You can see this most on the turkey pictures below. Overall, day pictures are really solid.
Night pictures have plenty of flash range, illuminating the entire area in front of the camera evenly from left to right. There will be white out on close objects, as the flash can be a bit overpowering. Overall, these are super bright night photos and score very well.

Video quality is almost identical to the picture quality. This is 1280 x 720 video but does not have audio. The videos lack the clarity that you see on some of the higher resolution cameras, but overall, these are good videos. Night videos have tons of flash and good contrast.
Megapixel Ratings:
In the past, many people get confused with the megapixel rating trail camera manufacturers advertise. Companies inflate the mpxl rating to attract eyes to their products. They do this through interpolation, which digitally adds megapixels to a photo without actually improving the picture.
The best way to judge picture quality is to look at actual pictures. You will notice this the most when you zoom in on a full-size image that a camera has taken. The details of the photo will appear hazy or even digitized. This is normal, and to be expected.
Battery Life
Resting Power (on): 1.04 mW | Daytime Power Consumption: 2.0 Ws | Nighttime Power Consumption: 9.4 Ws
Battery life is very good for a red glow game camera. The night consumption is high, but everything else is very efficient.
If this camera were to take 35-day pictures and 35-night pictures every 24 hour period, this camera would last 7.4 months in the field on a set of lithium batteries.
Picture Trigger & Recovery Speed: 0.65 s. / 0. 7 s. | Video Trigger & Recovery Speed: 1.46 s. / 7.4 s. | Detection Range: 60 ft.
Picture recovery is outstanding and well under 1 second. Trigger speed is above average for both pictures and videos. 7 second recovery time is very slow, though.
Detection range is 60 ft. Overall this is a solid detection circuit that would score much higher with quicker video detection speed.
Dimensions: 5.75" x 4.75" x 3.25" | Battery Type: 8 AA Batteries | External Battery Jack: 12 Volt
The case design is a touch larger than other cameras but feels very sturdy. The latch is huge, which has made opening and closing with cold fingers quite easy.
"The latch is huge... easier to open with cold fingers"
The python lock bracket is an extremely poor design. The loops are angled which makes the camera sit poorly on a tree if you are only using the python lock and not the security case. It would also be pretty easy to torque the camera in a way to easily snap the brackets. We don't like this design at all, the only way to truly correct this is to use the camera with a security case.
"Python lock bracket is an extremely poor design"
The programming definitely takes some getting used to but after playing with it for several minutes we got the hang of it. Whether we magically got smarter in 2016 or just more accustomed to the new Moultrie programming, the learning curve wasn't a steep as the 2015 Moultrie cameras.
The higher end Moultrie game cameras, like the M880 and M888, have not experienced any durability problems the last year. No major complaints or warranties.
2016 Moultrie M-888 Conclusion
The 2016 M-888 is the prototypical no-frills wildlife game camera. This camera is well-balanced in nearly every category and possesses excellent night photos.
